ABT Sportsline visiting friends at the Red Bull Ring

Earlier this year, ABT Sportsline’s first season with Lamborghini in the DTM began with a spectacular Red Bull film shoot in the Austrian Alps. This coming weekend, the team from Kempten will be back with its friends in Austria.

“It’s always nice to come to the Red Bull Ring,” says ABT Motorsport Director Martin Tomczyk. “You just have to feel at home there. The track is located in a picturesque landscape and always guarantees exciting races. From a sporting point of view, the Red Bull Ring is a rather difficult track for us. That was already the case with the Audi R8 and hasn’t really changed since we switched to Lamborghini, because the package as a whole, the naturally aspirated V10 engine and the car concept, is similar and not ideal for the track characteristics.”

The Red Bull Ring is 677 metres above sea level, so cars with turbo engines have an advantage in the thin air. At 1,340 kilogrammes, the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 is also the heaviest vehicle on the entire DTM grid. This makes the 65-metre difference in altitude and accelerating out of the slow Turns 1 and 3 particularly painful.

Nevertheless, ABT Sportsline has fond memories of Styria – especially 2023, when Kelvin van der Linde celebrated an unexpected victory in the rain and Ricardo Feller completed a double podium for the team from 26th on the grid. The weather forecast for the coming weekend is once again changeable.

Mirko Bortolotti celebrated a victory at the Red Bull Ring in 2024 and got in the mood for his home race in the DTM with a guest start in the GT Open racing series last weekend. “It’s been a difficult year so far,” says the Italian, who lives in Vienna. “The standings do not reflect our original goals. I always try to get the best out of my car, and I will do the same at the Red Bull Ring. Last year, I won my only race of the season here and have fond memories of the track.”

“The surroundings with the mountains are beautiful, and thanks to Red Bull, it’s also a bit of a home race for us,” says his team-mate Nicki Thiim. “However, it’s not my favourite track at all – and neither is it for our car, given our top speed deficit. Nevertheless, I will try to do my best as always. It’s the penultimate race weekend of the season, and of course you want to deliver. I just hope we have a little more luck than last time – although we don’t need any more luck than the others, just not as much bad luck.”

The two DTM races will start at the usual time of 1:30 PM CEST on Saturday and Sunday. In German-speaking countries, the DTM will be broadcast live on Joyn, ran.de, ProSieben and Servus TV while the series can be watched live all around the world on TV and YouTube. All DTM races can also be viewed on Red Bull TV.

“It’s always nice to come to the Red Bull Ring.”, says ABT Motorsport Director Martin Tomczyk.
